Duggan-Dugan Newsletter nr Seven 23 March 1995 All addresses in this issue are aol.com addresses This newsletter was origionaly sent out in full by email. My address is now lyman@duggan-family.org From: DReyno3650 To: LYMAN DUGG Hi, Lyman: I don't know if PAF is a freebe, or perhaps it is if you can download it somewhere. I bought it for less than $50 from the LDS church locally, also available from Salt Lake City. Yes, I like it. I have also used Family Tree or Family Tree Maker, which was OK for the money ($5) and the not too fanatical researcher. It even typed up a book for me from the input I gave it. It is limited, however, to about 5 or 6 details about each person. PAF is endless in its complexity, and I don't know it all yet, as I'm new to computing, but not so new as to have had no trouble. My hard drive has crashed twice on two different machines, losing my files both times and as a result, most of my files are still in a real paper notebook. Yes PAF has Gedcom, and I'm working on understanding it. When I do I'll be glad to send you the files, which are extensive, as I've been working on my Duggan line for nearly 20 years now. It may be shareware, in which case you are expected to regester your copy and pay the fee if you down load and indeed use it. This is the case with my "Brother's Keeper" program which I like very much. Too bad about your hard drive crash..back-up, back-up, back-up. I notice that tape backup units are really cheap now. 145.00 wholesale here in Tampa. I'm very excited about sharing files with you. It sounds like you have most of the family information. It will be interesting to see what I get from this commercial concern in a couple of weeks. They are sending me all their Duggan files on gedcom disk. For those who are wondering what gedcom is, its a common language or protocall that all good genealogy programs can convert their files to. In other words, you and I can exchange data via gedcom files and then convert it back to the type of file that our particular genealogy program likes to use. If you would find it easier to send the gedcom to me on disk, my address is: Lyman Duggan, 7104 Seabury Court. Dear Steve, I found your message in the AOL genealogy archives. We have a Duggan- Duggan familiy newsletter here on-line and I have added you to the list to receive it. We have about 160 members here most of whom are family to you. If you want some help in tracing your Dugan roots, it would be best to start with your father. Any information that you could give us will help us help you. I see that there are a few Duggans in the Indianapolis phone book and as we all had two g's in Ireland, we are all really the same family. It might be an idea to phone some of them and see if they can share family data with you and us here on AOL. My listing does not show Dugans' but I' m sure there must be some of them too! We have issued 6 newsletters so far and soon they will be available to download from the aol genealogy archive form. I'll let you know when they are ready for download, which will probably be in a week or so. In about 2 or 3 weeks we hope to compile a list of Duggan/Dugans and their family trees. We would like to add you and your family too. I hope that you will write to us here on AOL and we welcome to your new Dugan family. Dear Paul, I found your note in the AOL genealogy archives. I am from Prince Edward Island in Canada which is only about 30 miles from Cape Breton Island. I am not aware of any of my family moving there but it is quite possible. I have been working on our family tree for several years now. We have a Duggan-Duggan family newsletter here on-line and I have put you on the list to receive the next issue which should be in a few days. We all share information on our family trees. You will be pleased to see that one of your cousins has traced family to Cape Breton. He is here on AOL too and you will read about him in the next Newsletter. Could you tell me what you have gathered about your family so far? I was very interested to hear about the name change to Durgan. Do you know the story behind the name change? Did you hear about that from a relative. hope to hear from you soon, Lyman Keir Duggan Tampa, Florida ................................................................. Can you share your Dugans' with us? hope to hear from you again soon Lyman Duggan ....................................................................... . From: Judgeman To: LYMAN DUGG Hi! I live in Cerritos, Ca. Our family moved out here from Stubenville, Ohio. About the one "g" in my last name, as the legend goes, it was changed at the Ellis Island terminal as my relatives came over from Ireland. It is possible that the officials thought that it was unnecessary to have two "g"'s in Duggan. Or, as my grandfather used to say, we were to poor to afford the second "g". Thanks for the newsletter! BYE! Judgeman (John Dugan) Dear John, Good to hear from you again and to hear about your Ohio roots. Do you still have family there? Can you share some names, dates etc with us? Are there many Dugans in your part of Calif.? Where is Cerritos? Glad that you enjoy your on-line family and I hope that we will all hear from you again soon....................Lyman ...................................................................... From: PDugan To: LYMAN DUGG Looking forward to the first newsletter. By the way, the story I've been told is that all of us Dugan's (Duggan's) started out with one "G" and if you got into trouble the judge would add the "G" to help identify you in the future. PDugan PS. Don't leave out NDugan ......................................... Dear Patrick, Well if your "G" theory is correct, there should be a lot more g's in my name than there are! You should have your first Newsletter by now. You will be able to download the back issues in a few days. Its good to hear from another Patrick. So far the Patricks are just outnumbering the Johns. Are you Catholic? Most of the Patricks at home are, and most of the Johns are protestant. Home is eastern Canada. Perhaps Catholic/Protestant is a bad subject.. In Ireland it could be I guess...I dont really understand what is going on over there with all the hatred...It's crazy really isnt't it. Well lets hear more from you and your family. And who are you trying to kid about Funnydale???? Well, maybe in California your not kidding after all???? And who is NDugan, I can't find a profile under that name. First you might just ask me for my tiny taffle file which lists all the Duggans. I also have a book that lists all the Duggans who were in a usa phone book around 1985. Someone else is trying to sell me a Duggan book that covers several countries and also goes back in time. Do any of you have this? Is it any good? By the way, you may gather that this msg is going out to all 62 of you. I have a Duggan coat of arms in the form of a color certificate. Does any one have a color scanner that could make a .gif file so that i could sent it out to you all on-line If you want the list of aol duggans, just do a member search with the name Duggan...its in the free area...you can also look at the profile of each person that lists on the search!! doesnt cost a dime! I'm interested in your info! My great- grnadmother came from Couty Cork and settled in Iowa. Most of my family on the Duggan side was from Muscatine, Iowa, as I am. My grandfather (James Duggan) actually added a "g" to our name, and his sister Theresa Dugan refused to go along with the plan. My father (William James Duggan) died in 1976. My grandfather's name was James Duggan. He died in 1992 or 1993 in Muscatine, Iowa. His sister's name was Theresa Dugan (only one "g")...she died in 1993 or 1994 in Muscatine, Iowa. James' wife, Bernice died in car accident in Muscatine in about 1986 or so. James and Bernice had my father, William James Duggan, born in 1931, died in Muscatine, Iowa in 1976, Richard Duggan, still living in Muscatine, Iowa (age around 62), Phyllis Duggan-Bartenhagen (still living in Lathrop, CA), Eileen Duggan-Bennett (still living in Muscatine, Iowa and twins...Judy Duggan-Vargus and Jan Duggan-Boche, both still living in Muscatine,Iowa. Thanks for your interest and your effort. It is greatly appreciated. My best, Al ------------------------------ Al, Don't ever think that your family details bore me!!!!!! I want you to give me as much detail as you can. Through the magic of the on-line computer, I hope we can all eventually make a connection. I really believe that this is possible but I need the details, really. Okay, next, when were they born and where, can you list spouses and children even if they dont carry the family name. I need a printer driver to get my printer going in windows and as soon as I do I'll be able to print this newsletter and have a good look at it. Then I can start to piece together some of the family trees that are taking shape like yours. I hope to be printing in a few days Go back to work on the details and write to me again soon. lyman ....................................................................... . .................FOUND ON AOL The "famine" ended in 1849 when the British troops stopped stealing vital foodstuffs from Ireland.
