Duggan-Dugan Family Newsletter SIX 22 March 1995 All addresses in this issue are aol.com addresses This newsletter was origionaly sent out in full by email. My address is now lyman@duggan-family.org From: DReyno3650 To: LYMAN DUGG Thanks much for the newsletters, Lyman. I've been tracing my Duggan line for about 20 years. Didn't recognize any first cousins in your newsletter, but then I'm the youngest daughter of the youngest son of a family of sixteen children. It's beginning to dawn on me that my older cousins are dying off, so there's only my brother, Bill and cousins, George, Thurman, and Ted Edward Duggan that are left with the name. My grandfather, James Swint Duggan b in 1840 d 1911, was an old man when my father, Lawrence Clyde, was born in 1902. I wasn't born until 1926. My Duggans also migrated from NC to GA to ALA to LA to TX. And, yes, we did all have dark hair, even seven or eight generations after leaving Ireland and all the intermarriages. And, I might add, a wild sense of humor. I have all my info on PAF. ............................. Hi Willidean, Is PAF a genealogy program? does it have a gedcom output? if you could send me your data on a gedcom file, I could put it in my own program. I will have more Duggan data in a couple of weeks and at time I can send you all my files in gedcom format if you like. Perhaps I have the same wild sense of humour! ...............lyman Willadeen! Well I was able to answere my own question about PAF. I came across it while surfing the genealogy section and found that it IS a program and looks like a freebee too. Tell us, do you like PAF? Have you compared it to any other genealogy programs? Can it output a gedcom file? Can you send me a gedcom file on your family? I want to put a big gedcom together and put it in the archive section and perhaps update it every once in a while. I sent away for a Duggan gedcom file from a Commercial group and hope to have the disk in a couple of weeks. I would like to add your file to it (and mine and others too)! I hope that everyone will share their family history with their cousins. If we all work at it a bit and pool our data we are sure to make connections and have some good fun. Here are some things we need to know : -Names in full -birthdates and place -death dates and place -marriage dates and place -aunts and uncles grandparents nieces and nephews siblings children spouses etc. -personal notes about people If you will give me this information, I will put it in my program and share it with everyone. Please do this now while the information is available. I didn't do this years ago and now a lot of our family data is burried in the ground. A friend has put my announcement about the availability of a Duggan Newsletter, on Compuserve directing our C'serve cousins to us here on AOL. I hope that we will start hearing from them soon. Prodigy is probably next. Does anyone here use Prodigy? I hear that there is a lot of good genealogy information there. How about the Internet? I wonder if we can connect direct to the Duggans in Ireland on the Internet....Wouldn't that be something! ....................................................................... From: Appleglow To: LYMAN DUGG I would be pleased to send you a Gedcom Disc but first let me have some idea who your pople are and vica versa. I hope you don't mind this approach. I'll send you a brief note telling you about my Gillises who wereamong the Tracadie Sttlers and my Mac Donalds from East Point and you do the same to see if there might be some connections. .............................. OK DUGGAN, LING, CHAMPION, MATHESON, MACRAE, MACKAY,CAMPBELL, SUDSBURY,MACPHAIL, ANDREWS, WOOLNOUGH, WARREN, MURPHY, MACPHEE, STANFORD, SEAMAN, CONNICK I will be spending time at the govt. genealogy records bldg in Charlottetown this summer. I probably wont arrive there till early july. If you are going to do research there I would advise you to take a lap top computer if you can. There are no computers available there to use. I've been thinking of donating an older 286 that I have as they should really have several there. Some days there are 25-30 people in there competing for desk space! I am really hitting a brick wall with the Duggans and can spend days searching and come away empty handed. Think this year I will leave the Duggans alone and get some professional help then spend my time in other directions so I dont get so discouraged. lyman .............................................................. From: Hdugan To: LYMAN DUGG Dugan is my married name, but I do know some of its roots. The Dugans were originally O'Dugans. Only one 'g'. They dropped the 'O' for convenience when emigrating. Just so you know, and yes, I'd love the newsletter. --Heidi Screen Name: Hdugan Member Name: HEIDI DUGAN Location: PHILADELPHIA, PA USA Birthdate: 04/21/71 Sex: Female Marital Status: Married Computers: IBM compatible, Mac, NeXT Hobbies: mass media, roleplaying, reading, cross-stitching, tv, movies, etc. Occupation: Graduate Student ....................................... ok heidi you are on the list! does hubby have the family tree on the computer? can you share it with us? Hi Larry, Thanks for your email. You are on the list. You have missed a few issues but I hope to have them in AOL genealogy archives soon so you will be able to download them. When I get them archived I will put download instructions in the newsletter so everyone will have access to them. Do you have some faimily data to share with us? :Lyman Duggan ....................................................................... .. TRYING TO FIND A DUGGAN HERE IN THE USA? I have a listing of every Duggan who was in a USA phone book in 1985. Give me the info you have and I will have a look for them. The list is by state and the covers about 4000 households. The state with the most Duggans is Massachusetts! Next is NewYork, California, Texas and Florida. There was only one Duggan family listed in Wyoming and only two in Utah! ....................................................................... .. Many IMMIGRANTS arriving on Ellis Island were lucky to disembark from the ships that carried them across the Atlantic with old names intact. An inspector glancing at a long Italian name for instance would shorten the surname or Americanize it. Giuseppi Castlglione became Joe Castelli. A Norwegan with an unpronounceable name would be asked for the name of the village he left. Many more new residents to America couldn't write their names, so offficials wrote down what they thought they heard. It might seem strange to us today as name conscious as we are that these arrivals so easily accepted a shoddy treatment of what should have been a very prized possession---their family name. But, remember, at this point the immigrants major concern was to get off Ellis Island. ....................................................................... .. DO YOU WANT TO SEARCH STATE RECORDS FOR ANCESTORS? Write to me here on AOL and I will give you the addresses for the Bureau of Vital Statistics for any state that you like. Sorry but I dont have any phone numbers. ....................................................................... . QUESTION : Where can I find Genealogy forms to help organize my records? ANSWERE : Mail me a self addressed, stamped envelope and I will send you : 1-blank Family Group Sheet 1-blank Four Generation Ancestor Sheet You can then PHOTOCOPY them as often as need be.
