Duggan-Duggan Family Newsletter # Three All addresses in this issue are aol.com addresses This newsletter was origionaly sent out in full by email. My address is now lyman@duggan-family.org Subj: Another cousin Date: 95-03-11 14:34:13 EST From: JackDug To: LYMAN DUGG Lyman, I'm Jack Duggan, John L. Duggan Jr. I discovered thanks to your newsletter I'm KDuggan554, Kevin's cousin, his grandfather and my great grandfather were brothers. So I'm John L. Jr., son of John L., son of John Harold, son of John Andrew, son Michael Duggan from Tipperary through New Orleans to Missouri in 1850. I'm a banker, live in Mill Valley, California, 48 years old, cycle, hike, try to cross country ski and have learned to speak Spanish in the last few years, still learning. I have three sisters Ellen, Joan and Cathy and my brother has one brother, now deceased, Edward Price Duggan. I have three cousins, Debbie, Edward, Dennis and Mark. Except for Dennis they all live in California. I've only visited the family in St. Louis a couple of times as a child, but I know my father has lots of cousins there, though Kevin is the first I had heard from outside of John Andrew and Catherine (the Duchess) Duggan. Duggan and Duffy are related names and as I understand it, mean dark or dark visage. They're the Gaelic equivalent of the Spanish name Moreno. So thanks for starting all of this. Regards, Jack Duggan ........................ Jack! Good to hear from you. Somewhere you may have read that my grandfather was a John...John Champion Duggan..and everyone called him Jack. Have you heard the Irish folk song "Wild Colonial Boy"? Its the story of the demise of Jack Duggan. I spent a couple of weeks in the Govt records building last summer looking for more Duggans and of course Duffy would be right next to Duggan in all the files. There are a lot more Duffys at home than Duggans.. Think we would have to go back to Ireland to see the connection though...Wonder if their is a Dougan connection? I've already contacted a few Dugans (one-gee) and it will be interesting to see if they get back to me. Do you have a genealogy program for your computer? Lyman Duggan Subj: Re: Another cousin Date: 95-03-12 11:12:59 EST From: JackDug To: LYMAN DUGG Thanks for the note. Of course, I've heard the song. It's part of the pleasure of being called Jack Duggan. No I don't have a geneaology program yet. I'm still trying to figure out how to unload programs and that sort of thing. By the way I think one of your other addressees is my sister. So I found my sister in cyberspace. Of course, in that other place we contact, but this is a first in cyberspace. Date: 95-03-11 16:33:22 EST From: WDugan9491 To: LYMAN DUGG CC: Lake612 Thanks for your interesting contact. Have only short time to respond now. More later. Have Dugan- Markey ancestors from Lough County who came to Canada about 1844 when potatoes were in trouble.. They moved to near Buffalo NY then to Waukesha Co. Wisc.with many offspring - mostly Catholic. I have reached back to 1807 and have a fairly complete tree to present - mostly of interest to my living cousins (11 out of 17 live) I am 85 - retired college prof at U. of Minn -now live central Minn. More later? Dear Willis Thanks for your quick response. Do you have your tree on the computer? 'Can I have a copy of your files? Hope I can be a clearing house for a Duggan/Dugan data base. I look forward to hearing more from you when you have the Time...Looks like you have a lot to share with us. Date: 95-03-11 18:37:31 EST From: JTDugan To: LYMAN DUGG, WDugan9491, VPearl, David2341 Responding to message from Lyman Dugg: I don't believe I know any of the other Dugan's addressed, but I'll have to look back over the profiles to make sure. My take on the one-g vs. two g's: Dugan and Duggan are basically the same family name. The "Du" part comes from the Irish word "dubh," which means "black." The "gan" part is of uncertain origin, but might be related to "ceann," the Irish word for head (sometimes taken as a reference to "hair" in this case). I've seen the name spelled in modern Irish as O'Duagain, and in older Irish as Ua Dubhagain (which sounds the same). The Irish word "dubh" is pronounced like the English "doo" further north in Ireland, and more like "dove" further south. Duggan with two g's reflects the southern pronunciation, while Dugan with one g reflects the northern pronunciation. According to one source (I'd have to go look up which one), there were at least four independent families with the name Dugan/Duggan in Ireland, but you can't use the one-g vs. two-g's to tell one from another. My great-great-grandfather, Timothy (Tadhg) Dugan, came from County Donegal in 1844, and settled in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. His descendents are now scattered around the country, but most still live in the "tri- state" area where Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware meet. I was born in Philadelphia, and now live in Santa Clara, California. I have documented my Dugan, Brady, and McLaughlin ancestors back to about 1850, but haven't been able to pick up the trail in Ireland (the records are poor). I'd be happy to share what information I have, and would love to hear from any others doing genealogical research on these family names. I'm afraid researching some Irish names is very difficult. Dear Jim, Thank you for your quick reply. Your letter is very interesting and I am sure it will be enjoyed by all your cousins here on AOL. I have another Newsletter almost ready to go out and it confirms some of the old spellings that you used in your letter to me. Do you have your family tree on the computer? Can you send me copies of your files? Looking forward to hearing more from you! Lyman Keir Duggan ....................................................................... ... Big Duggan data base! In the next few weeks I hope to obtain a big data base on the Duggan/Dugan family. It is coming from a firm that claims to have over 3 million names on file. Heaven only knows how many Duggans there will be in the file. Perhaps they just search the aol members! There are a lot of scams out there. They asked me to send my files so perhaps they are okay, lts hope so. Should be interesting to see what I get! I can hardly wait! Here is a note I got from them: Subj: Re: genealogy Date: 95-03-12 08:57:24 EST From: EvelynS825 To: LYMAN DUGG Lyman-When we receive a GEDCOM we add it to our database and distribute the data to thousands of researchers. We do this at no charge and you need not buy anything to use this service. To receive disks from us you must send $10.00 per disk to the address below. We send all disks in GEDCOM format. At this time we have over 3 million names in our database. We can send disks on the surnames you request before we add your families to them if you request it at the time of ordering. Hope this answers your questions. FAMILY DISK EXCHANGE EAST 12502 FRIDEGER ELK, WA 99009 ....................................................................... ... Subj: Re: Duggan Newsletter Date: 95-03-11 15:45:04 EST From: JohnD230 To: LYMAN DUGG Lyman, I received your reply/newsletter. Its enjoyable reading. My address is 924 S. Third St., St. Charles, IL 60174. If you could send the "brothers keeper" and phone book, I would be happy to compensate you for postage, etc. I'm now trying to draw the Duggan crest I sent you by tracing the image within Canvas. If it turns out any good I'll forward to you. By the way my fathers name was John, but he too went by Jack. My wife (whose father is off the boat from county Mayo) is trying to get me to adopt the name "Jack" aka the wild colonial boy. Your mail has inspired me to begin re-reading the book I mentioned. I only have a draft copy, but it is interesting reading. According to his research Duggan comes from Galic compound of dhuv - meaning black, and ceann - meaning head. His translation is "the slight dark haired one". The book is also an interesting history of Irish Clans etc. So long for now. Keep in touch. John Edward Duggan Dear John, I've copied the Brothers Keeper and Duggan files to two disks and I will mail them to you tomorrow. Load all the pgms and files to your hard drive in a directory called "BK5". When you are finished and in that directory, type bk and the program will run. It is a dos program and will not run under windows. Its easiest to use the modify command to brouse through the data base. There are some "readme" files that will show you how to use the finer points. Let me know if you need any help. If you find the program really helpful you might want to consider becoming a regestered user. Instructions are included with the software. While you are reading your book perhaps you could share bits and pieces with us. My Duggan Phone Book is a hard back and not on computer disk but if you want me to look anyone up for you I be glad to..It covers all Duggans who were listed in a USA phone book in 1984. Subj: RE:Duggan-Dugan Newsletter Date: 95-03-12 15:24:07 EST From: DMcnelly To: LYMAN DUGG I would be interested in recieving a copy of your newsletter. I am currently tracing a Dugan line. The latest Dugan I have recorded is a John Dugan who married Eliza sometime before 1837. I do not have birth or death dates on either. I do have the records on one of their children Erastus Dugan born 1/16/1837 in Troy, OH died 11/18/1927 in Harding, KS. Would any of this info correspond with what you have? Please e-mail me at Dmcnelly. Dear D Thank you for your note. The Dugans you mention are not familiar to me but we can use all the information we can get. Your note will be included in our newsletter which now goes out to about 170 people so perhaps someone will recognize those names. Do you have more to share with us?
