DUGGANS IN TENNESSEE Date sent: Thu, 23 Nov 1995 15:27:42 -0500 (EST) From: Michael Welsh Duggan To: "Lyman" Subject: Re: Duggan Newsletter nr 13 Hello. As you can see, I have received the thirteenth edition of your newsletter. I personally, an not a real geneology buff, but if you do not have information of my branch of the family, I am certainly willing to get the information from the people in my family that do have an interest. I am Michael Welsh Duggan, son of Robert Beaman Duggan Jr., son of Robert Beaman Duggan Sr. Our branch came from a Robert Duggan who bought several acres of land in Tennessee in Severe County. We have a family reunion there every year. I can't remember what date it usually is around, but I can find out the info. If this does not give you enough information to pinpoint my branch of the family, I will try to get a more detailed picture. In the meantime, can you lead me to an ftp archive of previous newsletters? On a curious note, via what means did you locate my email address? Oh, by the way, you probably want to see if you can get a mailing list rerouter at your site or some other variety of distribution list. Sending 60 lines of addresses in the header is generally considered moderately impolite. Try to contact your site admin and see if they can set up something. Michael Welsh Duggan md5i+@andrew.cmu.edu ........................................... Dear Michael, Many thanks for your email. You have an example of our typical newsletter. I have them all in one file to enable a quick search. We also have a couple of big Duggan GED files. As we don'thave an FTP site, I can only offer the data on disk at this time. Until recently I was only on AOL and have just moved to the net. The mail program I am using is called Pegasus 2.0 It seems to work fine until i send big files with multi address then it behaves in a strange manner. Sometimes it jams befor the list is completed making it necessary to send again. >Oh, by the way, you probably want to see if you can get a mailing list >rerouter at your site or some other variety of distribution list. >Sending 60 lines of addresses in the header is generally considered >moderately impolite. Try to contact your site admin and see if they >can set up something..........xxxx.......thanks for your comments, >there may be a way to do this with only one address showing and >perhaps you have the answer... I will contact my provider and see if >they can help... i agree it is a bit much with that size of header. I probably found you through a search of the internet using "Duggan" You may have published a paper or posted to a newsgroup. I will include your other comments in the nex newsletter and hopefully you can make some connections. We would love to have more family data from you!..............................Lyman .............................................................................................. I printed it for further reference. I don't know if any of these Dugans fit in to my family tree. My Mary Diggin married Timothy Mangan and they lived in Droum, Glenbeigh near Mountain Stage around the 1870's, and my grandmother Bridget Mangan was born in 1874. She married a Timothy Bowler from Curraheen, Glenbeigh in 1902 and my mother Johanna Bowler was born in Nov. 1904 in Glenbeigh (Glenbehy) . I understand there were Diggins from Curragh Lake, near Killorglin, Co. Kerry, just a short distance from Glenbeigh. I have been corresponding with a Bernadine here on America Online who has Sean Diggins in her family tree, some of whom settled in Indiana. Other names in my family are Johanna Sullivan from Curraheen circa 1840's. Thank you so much for your prompt response in sending the newsletter. Isn't this genealogy hunt challenging? I suppose you know the Irish song "The Wild Colonial Boy" (Tom Duggan was his name). Please keep in touch, I don't have Brothers Keeper, I'm using Family Treemaker, but I may look at Brothers Keeper once I learn my way around this computer.. Subj: DUGGAN FAMILY HISTORY Date: 95-12-07 15:58:10 EST From: GHANLON To: LYMAN DUGG Hi, I am also researching my Duggan roots. I printed out your newsletter, but did not find mention of my particular branch of Duggans. Our family, Dennis and Mary Duggan, appears to have arrived in the US in 1850, and settled in NY. They eventually moved to Minnesota, near Owatonna. William, their son, married Bridget Cummings of Iowa, and they lived and died in Austin MN. William's son, George, served in the Spanish American War, and then moved to Woodland, CA. I have a lot more detailed info., but want to keep this short, but am willing to send all additional info. to anyone who might be interested. I would appreciate it if you could send me the program "Brothers Keeper" and whatever Duggan files you have to my son-in-law's AOL mailbox, as I do not have one of my own. I will also be sending you a self addressed stamped envelope for a copy of Family Group Sheet and Four Generation Acestor Sheet. My husband and I live in Mexico and do not have a phone, therefore, no access to AOL. Thanks........Barbara Duggan Dahl, Col. Vicente Guerro, Baja Mexico. ............... Barbara....thanks for your email...I will send you all the newsletters on disk and brothers keeper when I get your snail mail...I will include your message in the next newsletter and hopefully some one will be able to connect with you in the future..If you would like to include a mailing address and more detailed data, it would help. He was born in 1879 in the Neward New Jersey area. His wife's name was Catherine Duggan (Hogan). I'm new at this research and just trying to get started. Thought your newsletter might offer some information. Thanks, -Larry .............................................. G'day Lyman. I'm Neil from "Down Under". That's 'Oz' (Australia) for all the Northern Hemisphere cousins. The other week I was surfing the Web looking for other Duggan'ses, when I came across a few references to Dominic Duggan at UWATERLOO. One thing led to another and Dominic sent me your address plus a copy of Duggan News, Issue 11, November 1995. I must admit, it was nice to find the rest of you. Duggan is not a very common name down here in the Antipodes, and it does get a bit lonely. With my wife Phillipa and our two children Rebecca and Daniel I live at Boweya (pronounced bo-ya) which is a rural district in the north-east of the State of Victoria, Australia. If you have an atlas, you will find us at: approximately Latitude 36degrees 16minutes South and Longitude 146degrees 09minutes East. I have only just started researching my ancestors, and of course would appreciate any help, hints, etc that you or your readers can provide. To date, I have: Daniel Henry Duggan; Born County Derry, Ireland, 1841. (Parents were Andrew Duggan and Mary Henry [farmers in Portglenone, I think] )... ...Daniel Henry migrated to Melbourne, Australia, approx 1858 (anecdotal evidence suggests that he travelled with a brother - Andrew - who subsequently left Australia for the USA - any cousins out there?)... ... so a few generations later ... here I am. Any suggestions / assistance with tracing the Irish and the American connections will be greatly appreciated. Anyway, enough of the past, I would also like to look towards the future. Are there any Duggan's / Dugan's / Dougan's out there who have young children - approx 6yrs and 8 yrs - and would like to start an e-mail equivalent of Pen Pals. You know, a sort of Cyber Buddies or Ether Mates. I would also be interested in exchanging correspondence with other Duggan'ses, adults that is. Please include me on the mailing list for Duggan News. I have not had contact with Dominic but I see the papers he has written each time I do a Duggan search on the net and perhaps he has a web page with some Irish links too...As this will be in the Newsletter, it will give me a chance to say "Hi Dominic", do you know Brad Templeton who hails from your great hall of learning? You probably do...nuff said ha ha...Your idea of PENPALS for KIDS in the DUGGAN family is a great idea! But you dont have to be a kid do you? Heck you can pick a cousin at random and go for it! Mary Duggan was an immigrant from either Mayo or Sligo county Irelan in the late 1800's, probably between 1880-1900. I had posted an item of interest regarding this in alt.genealogy and received a response from a Chris Duggan in which he refered me to you as a possible source of information. If you can give me any leads into the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Mary Duggan married Patrick Walsh in this same time period. They resided in Scranton, Pennsylvania and later moved to Bloomfield, New Jersey. I'm looking forward to exchanging information with you about our branch of the Duggan family. My mother and Jennifer's dad are brother and sister. Their dad was John Duggan and his parents were John and Elizabeth Duggan. So far most of my research has been done in the Madoc township, Hastings County, Ontario in the 1850's to 1900. John and Elizabeth were born in the 1840's and their children were Robert born about 1860, William 1862, John 1864, Mary 1865, George 1867, Alfred 1869 and Albert 1871. There are other Duggan families in that area but so far I don't know how they connect. By the way they belonged to the Presbyterian Church. I hope some of thei information will be of some use to you. I guess I should have introduced myself first. My name is Claire deJong and I live in Smithers, B.C., which is about 500 miles north of Vancouver (as the crow flies). A few years ago my mom (who is now in here 80's) was wondering what part of Ireland her family came from and that started my search. I am in my 50's now and had the time, and it sure is a time consuming hobby. Now I have to learn about computers and the Internet. For me it is quite a challenge. Bye for now, Claire ......................... Cousin Claire....it is good to hear from you....there certainly were a lot of John Duggans....or, he really got around. If you will send me your mailing address, I would be most pleased to mail you or anyone who reads this, the archive disk free of charge...If you use windows, you can use "write" to look at the files and search for any name you choose. The disk has over 700K of Duggan data. cheers.........Lyman Duggan ........................................................................................... My name is Claire deJong and I live in Smithers, B.C., Canada My cousin is Jennifer Duggan and she sent me your address. My mother's father was John Duggan (Dougan,Dugan). In my search of census records, death records, etc. I have found his family situated in Madoc, Hastings County, Ontario in the late 1800's. His parents were John and Elizabeth and children in order of birth and approx. birth dates were: Robert A. (1860), William (1862), John (1863), Mary (1864) she was born deaf, George (1866), Alfred (1868), Albert (1870). I am fairly sure that Robert A., George, Alfred, Albert and Mary stayed in the Madoc area. John married in 1902 in Madoc and moved west to Victoria, then the Yukon and then to Prince Rupert where he died in the 1930"s. So far I have no clues on William. Right now I feel like I'm caught in a time warp, 1870's to the early 1900's. By the way all indications are that this family belonged to the Presbyterian Church. I am looking forward to hearing from you and hope that we can share some information. Bye for now, Claire ............................................................ Hi Claire...send me your mailing address and I will mail you our archive disk which contains all the newsletters and a bunch of Duggan files that were never in the newsletters. I have comliled all the news letters in a ".wri" (write) file so as to make searching easier. If you use windows, bring the file into "write" and activate the Find/Search feature to search for any name you please...There is a bunch of Data from the Ontario census archives! this disk is FREE to all family members POSTPAID! .............Lyman .............................................................end of nr 14...................... .
