Duggan Duggan Dougan Newsletter Nr 13 ...............................22 Nov 1995 Hi Lyman...since my last msg to you about DUNGAN...have located a less expensive copy of THE ANCESTRY OF JEREMIAH CLARKE AND DUNGAN ANCESTRY. Instead of spending $80+ with Higginson Books ($57 when on sale), you can also get a fiche copy thru Ancestor Publishers for $27...which is a heckuva difference. They can be reached at: Ancestor Publishers PO Box 682 Arvada, CO 80001 USA 1-800-373-0816 1-303-420-3460 Hope this helps someone...and keep the newsletter coming. I should like to receive future editions, please. Our family left County Waterford for Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales between 1846 and 1851. They are listed in Welsh censuses 1851-1891.My gt-gt-gdparents were William (born abt 1815 in Waterford d.1886 Dowlais) and Mary (b abt 1810 in Waterford, d. 1888 Dowlais). I am descended from their oldest surviving son Daniel (b abt 1835 Waterford, d 1914 Dowlais) through his third son Cornelius (b 1864 Ebbw Vale, Monmouth, "England"then now Wales, d 1926 Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales) and C's only surviving son John Cuthbert (1901 Swansea-1961 Pangbourne, Berks, England). I have written a brief and preliminary history of this family and their in-laws. I am very interested in extending it to pre-famine Waterford. A note on the surname Duggan: it's Welsh, Scottish and Manx as well as Irish. In particular it's fairly common in Pembrokeshire and Radnorshire (old county mames) Wales. The Welsh name is derived from Cadogan. To complicate matters Cadogan was used as the anglicized form of the Irish name O Ceadagain. Since Welshmen migrated to Ireland and Irishmen to Wales it can be hard to know which derivation applies in a particular case. Thank you. From: rtipton@halcyon.com Date sent: Mon, 13 Nov 1995 06:23:38 -0800 Subject: Re: re: Dugggan Newsletter To: "Lyman" Dear Lyman, I was in error about my ggrandfather's name. He was James Duggan. His son was Arthur Duggan. He had a daughter, Pansy Duggan, and my grandmother, Myrtle Winifred Duggan, who married Dr. Chester A. Winn about 1895, somewhere in cook Cty but I could find no record of the marriage. Myrtle, and Chester had two children, Dorothy, who died without issue, and my father, Donald Chester, born in the Oklahoma Territory in 1903 at Mountain Park which is near Ft. Sill. Donald married my mother Mamie Ada Doughty in 1923 in Kansas City, MO. I, Mary Jeannette Winn, was born March 31, 1924. I have three children, Michael Martin Tipton, Geoffrey Russell Tipton, and Winifred Weston Tipton. Mike has one child, Matthew Michael, now 13, and Winifred was a daughter, Mary Doris Tipton-Green, just five. My sister, Jo Ann, whose address is Jo Ann Clifford 1179 N.W. Gooseberry Ct. Silverdale, WA 98383 had four children, Constance Jane Clifford, Elizabeth (dec.), Nancy Jeannette, and Christopher. None have any children so far. I have lost track of my brothers other than having what I think is a current address. Both have children but Donald died a couple of years ago. Donald Winn,(wife's address (I think) 9801 Santa Fe Lane Apt. 202 Overland Park, Ks. 66212 John Michael Winn 907 E. 6th Rolla, Mo. 65401 Mike's wife, Kathleen, is a professional genealogist so she could probably give you far more information than I can. "Cenntennial History of Decatur and Macon County" (page 361) published by the Decatur Review in 1930 lists Arthur M. Duggan as having fought in the Spanish American War. I do not know about children of either except I think I remember that my grandmother left her children with James and his second wife for a period and that they were also caring for another grandchild. James' wife, my ggrandmother, was Caroline Doty. I am sorry I can not give you more information but my grandmother did not really talk about your youth nor her marriage to Dr. Winn as she had been very unhappy and divorced him. She burned all papers refering to him before she died in 1984 in Kansas City, MO. She had remarried and her name was Mrs. Alvin Russell Brooking when she died. Her obit. would not tell you much more than I have. I know because I furnished the information for it. I have just recently started delving into the family history now that I am spending a gread deal of time at home with an invalid husband. I would appreciate any leads that you might be able top give me on James and his ancestry. Hope this helps you and I look forward to hearing from you again. Your cuz, Mary Tipton .................. Julia Duggan was my great grandmother and she married my great grandfather Timothy Kennedy. He was from Killkenny supposedly. Julia's parents names are not both known, her fathers name was Patrick Duggan according to the death certificate. Their son was William Kennedy, my grandfather. He died in 1947 or so. Much older than my grandmother. To date I have not been able to find out when julia and timothy married or anything. There were many Duggans (Dugans) in Vermont/New Hampshire in the 1850's-1880's time frame and I have not had the time to sort them all out. I find it very hard sometimes to make the time but this is a passionate interest of mine. Thanks. ....................................................................................... Patty..........thanks for the data....it will be in the next newsletter....hopefully it will help you make some connections.. You know it may take years but your email will be archived hopefully forever..........Lyman ...................................................................................... More from Patty below: Finally found my papers. Time just runs by so fast. Julia Duggan was born 3-13-1831 in Ireland per her death certificate. Her parents were Patrick Duggan and Julia ?. She died 12-8-1904 and is buried in the cemetery in Ludlow, Vt. She married Timothy Kennedy (8-7-1827 Ireland to 8-12-1874). Timothy came to Vermont by 1858, and they were married at this point and had two children born in Ireland. John born 3-19-185, Hannah Mary Moriah born 1857. In vermont they had Sarah Ann 9-23-1858 to 3-16-1864, Mary Elizabth Kennedy (m. James Toohey 1897,one son Harold Toohey,he married Alice McKenzie from Burlington, Vt.). Mary was born 6-22-1859 in Vt, death date not known. Next child was William James Kennedy 9-12-1864 to 10-18-1947, my grandfather. He married Mary Lucas 9-12-1910 and they have ten children. I got out of order here, Timothy was number 5, born 6-12-1861, died 4-11-1937. Never married. Most of them eventually died from Bright's disease except sarah who died from diphtheria at the young age. Hannah Mary Moriah married Charles Wiley and they had several children, son Arthur and daughters names not known. They owned a boarding house in New Hampshire and died there apparently, as did Timothy. Julia Duggan's name was listed as Johanna, and Johannah. She died of breast cancer She was a feisty widow after the death of her husband and it is recorded in Mt. Holly records that she requested payment of damages to her wagon of $3.25 in 1878. How's that? okay for information? ........................Patty. .................................................................................... The BOB DUGGAN home page My name is Robert S. Hi Lyman, I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you on this. There was some slowdown because the computer at eworld where our messages go was down over the weekend. Yours sat somewhere for awhile before getting to me. I can't approve your post to soc.genealogy.surnames/GENNAM-L yet. Because I suspect your newsletter is about a specific immigrant and his descendants or about people in a region smaller than the entire globe, I will ask you to make some attempt to define what places you are talking about - and some time frame. Revise your message and repost it, and we'll gladly approve it. Hi Again Lyman, After consulting the other moderators about how they handle mailing list/newsletter posts, I'll go ahead and post it for you - I've been on the job about 3 weeks, so I'm still learning what the others do. Your original message wasn't as catchy as what you wrote me just now - so I'm goint to edit down your message to the following and use it instead. I hope that's OK. You may send me a sample if you wish. It might be that part of it might make a good post later - maybe you could take one good item, post it - and mention the newsletter. Posts to the group should focus on one family, not on one name as a rule. Or you could enclurage your subscribers to post their own messages to soc.genealogy.surnames. Margaret Here's what will go in the post... + + I have about 150 Duggans on a DUGGAN mailing list from all over the + place....I am about to release the 13th issue. Would it be possible to get the addresses of any list members in Northern California? I know I've got a bunch of Duggan cousins in this area but I have not been in touch with any of them since the mid-1960s. If you can do it, I'd like a list of those with zip codes starting with 93, 94 or 95. Here's some info on my Duggan connection. Maybe you know of list members who have the same ancestor. My great-aunt, Loretta O'Malley, daughter of Patrick O'Malley and Catherine Lynch, married a William Duggan. I don't any have details (yet). The marriage probably took place in Chicago around 1915-1930. The family was large - as I recall there were 7 or 8 kids. In the 1950's the family moved to Northern California. Loretta died in Palo Alto, CA around 1969. I haven't done much research on this line yet though I do plan to soon. Your newsletter might get me into gear! BTW, how long have you been doing this newsletter. How often do you publish? Do you print it too or rely solely on electronic distribution? How much time do you put in each publishing cycle? Do you get lots of contributions from your list members? I was considering a similar undertaking for the DORAN name. My grandmother, Loretta's sister, married a DORAN. As I have researched that line I've developed of sizeable database of DORANs thoughout the midwest. I know there's others out there to share this information with. Thanks Barbara....................
