Hi Lyman...the DUNGAN line is out of Ireland partly...but my line specifically
is from St. Martin-in-the-Fields...which is supposedly England...

About the only real work done on the line(s) is ANCESTRY OF JEREMY CLARKE of
RHODE ISLAND AND DUNGAN GENEALOGY by Alfred Rudolph Justice. Available from
Higginson Books (print to order)...8.5x11 about 2 inches thick...runs about
$80, but is on sale about once a year for about $57...I have a copy...there has
been a proof/disproval back and forth about a connection back in 1600s
timeframe...but other than that, the book seems fairly accurate...and it goes
from that timeframe all the way to my grandmother...who is listed in the book
and I gave her a copy as a gift last Xmas...

Should you want to include the DUNGAN spelling...let me know and will send what
I have in notes from FIDOnet for the last 2yrs or so...between that and the
book...should be pretty helpful to ya...

Dear Paul,
Thanks for your email. You are on the newsletter list and I put your
last letter in it hoping that someone will be able to help you. I
note that you are involved with fido-net genealogy. I have heard of
this but have never used it. Is there a FAQ or something that you
could direct me to?

Hello Lyman,

I don't know any Duggan's in Halifax now. My father was Clyde
Duggan who left Halifax for the US in the 40's. His sisters,
Marguerite Perrin and Marie Fry still live there. My father
died in 1989.

I live in Westborough, MA with my wife Mary Fran. My mother,
Avia Duggan, lives in Milford, MA.

I would be interested to speak with you. I am leaving later this week
for Dartmouth College where will be a grad student. Since my email
will change shortly, I will forward a new address when I get one, and
I will plan to call you after the end of the month once you have returned
to Tampa.

Cheers,
  Chris Duggan

Black Irish refers to two possibilities.
1. Descendants resulting from the Norman Invasion of the 11th century.

or more likely

2. The early celtic settlers of Ireland (whom originated from the
Iberian Peninsula i.e Spain/France) who had dark hair. Several Gaelic
names derive from the Gaelic Word Dubhgilla (means dark stranger). These
settlers were the Milesians and arrived about 5000-3000BC and settled mainly
in the south east of Ireland (Wexford, Wicklow coasts etc).

The Red/blonde haired Irish descend from the sporadic viking and danish
invasions of about 400 - 1000 AD. By the time of the norman invasion (
1100AD) the new settlers had integrated into the predominantly Celtic
society and the Red/Blonde hair became as common as the Dark.

So depending upon what your family origins are it is either of Norman Invasion or
Celtic stock.

I think I had exchanged iformation with you quite some time ago and had wondered if I could get your newsletter. I have a DUGGAN in my line, Martha An DUGGAN, b. 1837 TN married my gggrandfather, Andrew Jackson PEOPLES b. 1832 TN. I am still without information about their marriage dates and about their parents, consequently I can't move ahead with research. I lost them in Alabama in 1860. Later family writings, have one son, James Lafayette PEOPLES b. 1862 in AL. Andrew and Martha are both buried in Shookville cemetary, Marion County, Illinois. Andrew died 1889 and Martha died? Martha was the daughter of Abraham DUGGIN and Suzanne ?. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks.

Lyman: I've had the chance to read some of your newsletter letters back in March, '95. At the time, I was quite busy and was not able to respond to you regarding my interest in what you are doing. If feasible, I would like to get your prior editions of the newsletter. I too am interested in the Duggan-Dugan name history. I started working up my family's history about 1 year ago. Have about 600 names on my side of the family and on my wife's.

Would appreciate the opportunity to join you and hopefully to contribute some of what I have learned about my namesake's history.

Regards, James Joseph Dugan (JDUGN1)

Lyman,

I am researching several Sussex County, NJ families, the principal one being the Giveans family. (My 85 year old grandmother is a Giveans). The earliest Giveans I have found is John Givens, born circa 1765, married 1) Christian (Dougan?), and 2) Elizabeth Benjamin. According to a Benjamin family history (which contains many errors on my line at least), Christian Dougan Givens was was the daughter of John Dougan and Mary (---), but I have found no other evidence of this, or even proof that her maiden name was Dougan. The only information I have on the Dougans is as follows:

NJ Archives, Calendar of Wills 1801-1805, page 136: 1802, Sept. 21. Dougan, John, of Vernon, Sussex Co.; will of. Names wife Mary. Also: Jane wife of James Benjamin; Mary and Sarah daughters of Joseph Simpson. Bond held against James Benjamin to be paid to John Givens and the interest to John Benjamin son said James. After wife's decease, estate divided between daughters Elenor wife of Joseph Simpson and Elizabeth wife of William Decker. Said 2 daughters to divide their mother's clothing with their half sister, Jane Benjamin. Executors wife Mary and son in law William Decker. Witnesses Elijah Randol (Randall), James Griffin, Daniel Stratton. Proved July 5, 1805. (Recorded Surrogate's Office, Sussex Co. Lib A. of wills, p. 51).
1805, Feb. 4. Inventory, $1,719.35; made by Robert McWhorter and William Sprague. File 1057S.
<Note: Christian is not mentioned at all, and I know she was alive in 1806 (signed a land transaction.>

Newspaper article, Wantage Recorder Feb. 26, 1937, page 7: Summaries of land and probate records, including Heirs of John Dugan, of Oxford Township (Sussex Co NJ): wife Hannan, John Dugan, Mary Kennedy, Margaret Graham wife of John Graham, Eliazabeth Gould wife of Garret Gould, Charity Cammell, Joseph Dugan.
<Note: Date is not given, and it is unclear how they might fit with the Vernon branch.>

The Giveans family appears to have come through Ulster and Orange counties, NY, as did many of the original settlers of the area, so possibly the Dougans did as well. I am sorry to say that this is all the information I have found so far. As you can see, I still have some work to do on this line, but I am happy to share what little I have.
